Frequently asked questions.
What is the rate of pay?
Our pay rates are based on the level of material taught, not the age of the learner:
KS1–KS4 material: £31 per hour (online) | £36 per hour (in person)
KS5 material or higher: £40 per hour (online) | £45 per hour (in person)
Location-based rates:
If you are tutoring in Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Gloucestershire, or Medway, the rate is £31 per hour for both online and in-person tuition, regardless of the key stage
Do you cover travel costs?
Support for travel to in-person tuition is available, you can invoice for £0.45 per mile.
Is tuition provided online or in-person?
Equal Education offers both online and in-person tuition to best meet the student's needs. Whilst we have experienced the effectiveness of online learning during recent years, we are also very aware that online tuition does not suit everyone. We therefore deem it important to continue offering both. In person tuition might be set at the student home, school or at a public venue such as a library - with an supervisory adult present at all times.
Which Teaching Qualifications do you accept?
Equal Education accept QTS and other teaching qualifications as specified HERE. Please note that depending on the teaching qualification you have, we may have additional requirements such as a number of years of relevant work experience.
Is there a contract?
Once you are successful in the application process, we will send you our Tutor Agreement to sign - this outlines the ways that we work and what we expect from each other.
Do I need to be Self-employed to tutor with Equal Education?
Yes - As a tutor at Equal Education, you will need to be self-employed and therefore manage your own taxes (not PAYE). Please check if your right to work status allows you to be self-employed.
How are drop-ins / Quality Assurance (QA) conducted?
Tutors receive an email to let them know when their QA / Drop in will take place and when it does they will have to record their lesson for that day whether it be online / face to face and QA will watch the video and mark the lesson and give them feedback.
How many hours can you give me?
If you are successful in the recruitment process, we will add you to our tutor community and start emailing you regarding suitable tuition opportunities. These would be based on a match between yours and the student’s availability, key stage, location, subject and the student’s overall needs.
What will my working pattern look like?
As it is difficult to predict the specific tuition needs of the children we work with, it means we cannot guarantee a certain amount of tuition hours nor a certain frequency of tuition requests. The majority of tuition takes place during term time, unless agreed with the referrer, parent/carer and tutor that it will continue during holidays.
Broadly speaking we offer two types of tuition:
Supplementary tuition, for children who are in school and require 1-2 hours of tuition per a week, either at home, at school or online.
Alternative provision, for children who are currently out of school, who require one to one tuition for up to 15 hours per week depending on their circumstances. This tuition would happen either at home, online or at a different venue, and usually takes place during school hours.
When can I start work?
This depends on how long it takes for your referees to respond, and then once we receive satisfactory references from both, we will conduct final safer recruitment checks and add you to our tutor community and start sending out some potential opportunities.
How much will I know about the student before I start working with them?
Once a tutor accepts a tuition, we at Equal Education provide the tutor and the parent/carer with all the required information on the student, including details of their EHCP if applicable, and they will book in the first session. Our team will be in contact with the referrer and parent or carer to acquire as much information as possible about the student.
How does Equal Education receive student referrals?
We work in partnership with Local Authorities and schools who refer students to our organisation. We do not receive private referrals.
What level of DBS check do I need?
As you are working directly with children, we require an enhanced Child Workforce DBS. If your DBS is not on the update service, it will need to be dated within the past year at the point of allocation. If your DBS is more than 12 months old, we can facilitate a new Enhanced Check for you at your own cost. We recommend that all tutors are registered on the DBS Update Service.
Can I tutor from abroad?
All of our tutors are required to be based in the UK to conduct tuition, including online tuition.
Who are the key stakeholders, and what terms should I be familiar with?
Below is a list of key stakeholders and important terms you may encounter while working with Equal Education. As an educator, you may already be familiar with many of these, but we aim to provide additional knowledge and clarity.
This list is not exhaustive—if you come across a term you’re unsure of, please don’t hesitate to reach out for clarification.
