International Women’s Day 2020

This International Women’s Day we are celebrating the work of our amazing tutors who are changing students’ and families’ lives for the better. Here are just a few of the many examples of Equal Education’s Winning Women…

Rose, East Anglia

Our fantastic tutor Rose has been working with a young pupil in a therapeutic care home. Rose spent time developing a strong relationship with the young learner, accepting the challenges facing the student with understanding and compassion. Once the relationship was established, learning took off. There was a strong focus on lifting the student’s numeracy and literacy skills to allow her to access the Year 11 curriculum along with supporting her emotional wellbeing. The tuition was a great success and the young person was able to return to mainstream education. The hard work and empathy shown by Rose is a strong reflection of the success our young people can have when supported by a strong role model.

Samantha, Essex

Samantha works with a young child with significant needs, including severe attention deficit and behavioural issues. At the beginning of tuition, the child’s engagement and comprehension was 1 on a scale of 1-5. Samantha has used a range of techniques to engage the child within just a few months, including using an online artistic resource. Samantha describes her interactions with the child in great detail in her session reports, painting a clear picture of the extent of the efforts she goes to in order to engage her pupils. During the tutoring sessions, the child’s engagement has reached a 5 and his comprehension of subject matter has reached a 3.

Mel, Bath

Mel is one of our amazing Bath tutors who is able to dig in to deliver tuition to students with very challenging behaviour. She is always happy to go the extra mile (sometimes literally) and be adaptable to the changing needs of the students she works with. She frequently goes into schools to provide emotional support to students as they complete practice exams and is great at compiling relevant information from the student, school, and parent, always making sure the student feels heard and valued. One foster parent commented: Fabulous tuition, my husband and I want to go over and do the learning with them. She is very engaging

Siobhan, Slough

Siobhan can be described as reliable, enthusiastic and kind. She cares deeply about the students that she works with and does not shy away from the varied challenges our young pupils face. Siobhan approaches her tuition with an open mind and empathy. Parents and carers have often commented on her patience. When I think about International Women's Day and the amazing women that we celebrate, Siobhan comes to mind. She is not only an amazing tutor but also an amazing person.

Nyree, Grays

Nyree is one of our biggest go-getters!  She does great preparation for each session and has an amazing capability to connect with students with special needs.  She was able to help one legally blind EAL student obtain his English, Maths, and Science GCSEs in less than two years, while also helping him become efficient at using braille. She still has the thank you note the student wrote in Braille!

Sadia, Birmingham

Sadia has been transforming our students’ experience and understanding of maths due to her passion for making this subject accessible to all and her belief in how empowering it is. She is enthusiastic about helping those who need it most, and has shown long term commitment to the young people she has worked with. As well as being an amazing tutor, Sadia also has some impressive haberdashery skills and is the kind of mother who manages to convincingly eat the interesting culinary creations her children concoct for her! Sadia is appreciated by her students, their parents and carers, and by all of us at Equal Education.
